Trial foiled attack Thalys begins, Clint Eastwood is witnessing

In Paris today the trial against the man who tried to attack the Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris in August 2015 begins.

The 26-year-old Moroccan Ayoub El K., carrying a Kalashnikov, a gun and a knife, was overpowered by three Americans, two of whom were civilian soldiers.

Hollywood star Clint Eastwood made a film about the event in 2018, starring the real heroes. He is summoned as a witness, because because of the reconstruction he made, he would know exactly what happened.

El K. had travelled shortly before his attempt to IS territory in Syria, says correspondent Frank Renout in the CCEit Radio 1 News. He is suspected of attempted murder with terrorist intent and could be given 20 years in jail for it. The judge has set aside about four weeks for trial.
