A protest by action group Kick Out Zwarte Piet in Maastricht was moved to the Mosae Forum at the last minute for security reasons. The action group wanted to demonstrate at the Vrijthof, but there was a large group of counterprotesters. The Mobile Unit intervened because, according to the police, it became too restless.
Police say its a small group of demonstrators from Kick Out Zwarte Piet versus a larger group of counterprotesters. The anti-Zwarte Piet protesters were escorted by agents to the new location, while in the background by counterprotesters “Zwarte Piet” was scanned.
“ Police are there to ensure that there is a safe setting,” says a spokesman. “For both Kick Out Zwarte Piet, but also for the counterprotesters and for the people who might be in town for Sunday shopping.”
“Large group of hooligans”
The protest of the action group has been moved to the Mosae Forum, a shopping area in the inner city. Kick Out Zwarte Piet describes the counter-protesters as a “large group of hooligans” and believes that “the voices of the Kozp protesters are limited and undermined”.
Just like in the rest of the country, Sinterklaas arrived in Maastricht at a secret location. A planned party at the Kesselkade in the city did not take place because of the corona measures, but yesterday morning an alternative entry could be viewed digitally.
The official entry of Saint Nicholas was yesterday, during which his steamer built on the Dieuwertje Blokkade in an unnamed place. The NTR had kept the exact place of arrival of the Sint secret in advance, to prevent it from becoming crowded when entering. This year the Sint has its Grote Pietenhuis located in the Soestdijk palace.
Also in many other places Sint en Piet arrived online this year:
