Donald Trump has set up a social network of his own. Invitees will be allowed to create an account on Truth Social from next month, and the rest of the public will also be welcome from the beginning of next year.
The US former president, who was banned from Twitter and Facebook for storming the US Congress, says he set up the new medium to cover what he calls “the tyranny of “Big Tech”. “The Taliban are huge on Twitter, but your favorite US president will be silenced. Unacceptable.”
“Everyone always asks me why no one does anything against Big Tech. Well, were going to do that soon!”
Screenshots of the new service show that Truth Social is based on Twitter, Trumps favorite social medium. Users can send short texts or photos, truths, or messages from others “retruth”. Account names are also preceded by the @ used by Twitter.
According to the accompanying text, everyone is welcome on the new platform, which “encourages open, free and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideologies”. “We wont always agree, but we welcome every opinion and dialogue.”
The concept images of the new app show major media companies such as Variety, Fox News and The New York Times, as well as users Jane & Jackson (“the best couple on Truth!”) , politically inspired Rebecca and singer-songwriter Laura Jones (#ILoveSinging “).
Trump sees Truth Social as the start of a media empire with which he also wants to compete with streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, CNN news channel and Amazon and Microsoft in cloud computing. Trump Media & Technology Group should be offering podcasts, entertainment programs and news in the future.
Previously, Trump was already trying to create a new portal for his opinions after being banned from other social media. That blog, From the Desk of Donald J. Trump, went offline after a few weeks due to lack of interest.
