Republican senator Mitt Romney is on a flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. scolded by supporters of President Donald Trump. On the plane, they scanned that Romney is a traitor. Images of that have been posted on Twitter.
Romney, who is a senator for the state of Utah, said in a statement on Sunday that he will endorse the results of the electoral college. Earlier, he announced that he did not vote for Donald Trump in the presidential election in November, which Joe Biden won over.
In December, voters formally voted in favour of Biden. Today, in the US Congress, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives, the electoral votes are officially counted.
A group of 12 senators led by Ted Cruz wants the electoral votes to be declared invalid and an investigation into the results. President Trump has been calling for widespread fraud since the elections, a claim for which there is no evidence. Trump lost countless lawsuits he filed about the election results.
Most Republicans respect the election results, including Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republicans in the Senate. His house was sprayed with graffiti a few days ago.
Romney was not only scolded on the plane, but was also addressed by a Trump trailer at the airport. A woman asked him why he didn‘t support Trump. Romney then asked her to put on her mouth cap and keep her distance. He said that he does support some of Trump’s policies, but that the elections were conducted according to the constitution.
A video of that appeared on a Twitter account of a user who calls himself Qtah. The q probably refers to Qanon, a conspiracy theory that claims that the world is ruled by satanic paedophile networks. According to conspiracy theory, Trump is fighting against those networks.
Donald Trump has called on his supporters to protest today in Washington, D.C. against approving the results of the electoral college. Thousands of participants are expected to participate in the March for Trump/Save America rally. There is fear of unrest, among other things due to the presence of the far-right organisation Proud Boys.
The leader was arrested on Monday for burning a Black Lives Matter-flag. Enrique Turio also had bullet magazines for large amounts of ammunition in his possession. He was released again, and the judge had to leave Washington.
