A trustee of the arrested head of government Aung San Suu Kyi has been arrested almost a week after the coup in Myanmar. Its about 79-year-old Win Htein. He was taken from his daughters house this morning.
Win Htein criticized the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi. She was arrested by the army on Monday. Its unknown where shes being held.
In interviews, Win Htein arrested today had called on everyone to oppose the coup détat as much as possible. According to him, ill-wishers are trying to discredit the country.
The army seized power last weekend, shortly before the opening session of parliament. New parliamentarians would be sworn in there. The army says there was a fraud in the November elections in which Suu Kyis party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), got the absolute majority.
Its been pretty quiet so far in Myanmar. However, sympathizers held a noise protest for days in a row in which they beat pots and pans from their balcony. To prevent bigger protests, the military has blocked access to Facebook.
Since the coup, almost 150 people have been arrested, including members of the government. The NLD demands that the army release its leader immediately.
US President Biden has said that the army must respect the outcome of the democratic elections and that the prisoners must be released. The UN Security Council also wants the military regime to release all prisoners.
