Twitter has transferred the official account of the US President (@POTUS) to Democrat Joe Biden. The messaging platform had previously indicated that this would happen automatically during the transfer of power.
The official accounts of the White House, the Vice President, the First Lady and the Press Spokesperson have also been handed over.
There will also be a new one: @SecondGentleman, for Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamal Harris. He already had over half a million followers without a first tweet.
@POTUS has 33.3 million followers, but Trump mostly communicated through his private account @realDonaldTrump with 90 million tweetters as a follower until the tech company suspended that account and later blocked it because of Trump‘s role in the storm of parliament on January 6. Biden’s private account has 24.5 million followers.
Remarkably, Biden sent the first tweet under the account @POTUS on January 15, five days before his inauguration.
