Twitter has blocked the account of influential Indian actress Kangana Ranaut. She has been guilty of hate and insulting people, says the company. Twitter would have warned the Bollywood actress several times.
Ranaut is a fanatic supporter of Indian Prime Minister Modi. The Hindu nationalist party of Modi suffered a defeat in local elections last weekend. Ranaut called on Modi in a tweet to “tame” the winners of the elections in the state of West Bengal.
According to Ranaut, one of those winners, the regional prime minister in West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, committed violent attacks on her opponents. Banerjee denies that.
Ranaut speaks of racism
“ We have been clear that we will take strict measures against behaviour that can cause harm. The account has been permanently blocked due to repeated violations of the rules,” says a Twitter spokesman.
Ranaut reacted furiously to the blockade. “Twitter has only proved my point. They are Americans, and by birth a white person feels entitled to enslave a “brown” person. They want to tell you what to think, speak or do. My heart goes out to the people of this nation who have been tortured, enslaved and censored for thousands of years and there is still no end to suffering,” she says.
Laws to censor opponents
Recently, Twitter in India has removed dozens of posts from Prime Minister Modi critics. And also on other social media, messages from opponents of the government are being removed. This is because laws have been introduced under Prime Minister Modi to apply censorship.
According to journalists and civil rights activists, more and more critics are being silenced by the laws.
Modes gets a lot of criticism of his approach to the coronacrisis. Critics say that in India many more people have fallen ill and died than the government has reported. The infection rates are peaking and the death toll are rising rapidly, partly due to a great lack of hospital beds, oxygen and other medical devices.
