Unfortunate Fabio Jakobsen is still in the head of Remco Evenepoel

Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) received a nine month suspension last week for causing the horror crash that Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) was the biggest victim of. Remco Evenepoel still has a warm heart to his Dutch teammate. โ€œYou are a superheroโ€, says the rehabilitating Belgian.

On August 5, Jakobsen was catapulted in Katowice during the opening stage in the Tour of Poland, after Groenewegen closed the door for his compatriot in full sprint. The Dutchman was badly hit in his face and was even in danger for a while. He‘s still recovering.

Three days after the fall of Jakobsen, Evenepoel won the fourth stage in Poland. Impressively and with a head start of almost two minutes on Jakob Fuglsang. When crossing the finish line, the Belgian supertalent gained the back number of his teammate.

โ€œ Retrospectโ€, he writes on Instagram. โ€œWinning after a solo of 52 kilometers for my good friend Fabio Jakobsen. All the energy I felt came thanks to his fighting spirit. Still now, while we both recover, he pushes me forward and makes me go through walls. A lot of strength, my friend. You’re a superhero. Forza Fabio.โ€

Evenepoel himself also experienced a horror crash. The 20-year-old Evenepoel, who won all four stage races he rode this year, fell on Saturday 15 August during the Tour of Lombardy over a wall of a bridge and ended up a few meters lower. He sustained a pelvic fracture and a bruise to his right lung. Evenepoel was in the hospital for ten days.
