According to Luke Shaw, referee Stuart Attwell did not want to award a penalty to Manchester United against Chelsea, because it would cause a fuss afterwards. Callum Hudson-Odoi seemed to make hands at Chelsea in its own sixteen meter area, but was not punished.
“The referee said to Harry (Maguire, red.): If I‘m going to give a penalty, it’s going to cause a lot of fuss after the match,” says Shaw after the clash between Chelsea and United in conversation with Sky Sports.
Attwell interrupted the game for a VAR check, but eventually did not grant a penalty. Shaw doesn‘t understand that. “It is confusing with this VAR. If it doesn’t turn out to be a penalty, they might as well let the game go on so as not to get the flow out of the game. But I‘m not going to complain about it here, because neither team deserved victory today.”
The match between Chelsea and Manchester United ended in a 0-0 draw.
Update: Shaw’s statements after the match against Chelsea keep their minds busy in England. The story now goes that Shaw misunderstood or understood arbitrator Atwell. This could have far-reaching consequences for the Manchester United Back, which could be accused of discrediting the arbitration.
