US millionaire Durst guilty of girlfriend murder

78-year-old American millionaire Robert Durst has been found guilty by a California jury of the murder of a friend of his in 2000, and a 2015 HBO documentary shed new light on the case. According to the prosecutors, Durst, from a stony real estate dynasty, has two other murders on his conscience.

The jury found it proven that Durst shot his good friend Susan Berman in the head in 2000. He would have done so to prevent Berman from testimony about the disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack. The millionaire is a suspect in that missing case, but was never prosecuted. Durst would have cleared Berman out of the way so she couldn‘t tell him she had helped him muffle his wife’s murder.

In 2015 Durst was arrested on suspicion of Berman‘s murder. Just hours after, the final episode aired in the HBO documentary about him, โ€œThe Jinx: The Life And Deaths Of Robert Durst.โ€ During the shooting, Durst talked about the murders when he thought there were no microphones on it.

Prosecutors underlined in court on Friday the importance of the documentary for Durst’s prosecution. โ€œIf they hadn‘t done those interviews, we wouldn’t be where we are,โ€ chief prosecutor John Lewin said afterwards about the filmmakers. A letter from the wealthy American and an audio recording of a friend of his were also submitted as evidence.

On October 18, the 78-year-old will hear his sentence for the murder of Berman. Durst is expected to get life.
