Tennis star Naomi Osaka has convincingly qualified for the semi-finals of the US Open. The Japanese number four of the placing list was in two sets too strong for the American Shelby Rogers: 6-3 6-4.
Osaka won the US Open in 2018 by surprisingly beating Serena Williams in the final. The 22-year-old Japanese continued with the title at the Australian Open in 2019, but since then has not made it to the quarter-finals at the Grand Lamb tournaments. She came in good shape to New York, where she made it to the finals of the Cincinnati WTA tournament a week and a half ago. Before that she signed out because of a femur injury, but it doesnt seem to bother her at the US Open.
In the first set Osaka broke the American number 93 of the world rankings twice. An early break in the second set could not undo Rogers. On 5-4, the two-time grandslam winner decided the match with a love game
Osaka meets another American tennis star, Jennifer Brady, in the semi-finals. Earlier in the day she won 6-3 6-2 against Joelija Poetintseva from Kazakhstan and reached the semi-finals of one grand slam tournament for the first time in her career.
Carreno Busta after long five-setter by
Pablo Carreno Busta has reached the semi-finals. The Spanish number 20 of the placing list defeated in a long five-setter the twelfth placed Canadian Denis Shapovalov: 3-6 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4) 0-6 6-4.
29-year-old Busta got a free pass to the quarter-finals in New York after his opponent Novak Djokovic was disqualified in the previous round in the first set of the game for misconduct on the rink. Out of sheer frustration, the Serb hit a line judge on her neck with a wild shot after he handed in his service.
The long game of Carreno Busta against Shapovalov turned out to be a decisive fifth set, after the Spaniard gave up the fourth set after a break. After more than four hours of play, Carreno Busta got his first match point and struck immediately. He is now in the semi-final against fifth-seeded German Alexander Zverev.
