US Open: Thiem meets De Minaur, doubles specialist Rojer to semi-finals

Dominic Thiem is the big favourite for the title at the US Open after the dramatic disqualification of the first seeded Novak Djokovic in New York.

The 27-year-old Austrian underlined his candidacy in the fourth round. He beat Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets: 7-6 (4) 6-1 6-1 after a difficult start.

The second-placed Thiem qualified for the quarter finals in New York for the second time. Earlier he <strong>reached the last eight in 2018. Furthermore, he never made it to Flushing Meadows.

Thiem is still waiting for his first Grand Prix title. The number 3 on the world ranking list already lost three finals on a major: once in Australia (2020) and twice in France (2018 and 2019).

Thiem plays at the US Open in the quarter finals against 21-year-old Australian Alex de Minaur.

Rojer in semi-final doubles

Dutch tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer reached the semi-finals in the mens doubles at the US Open. With his Romanian tennis partner Horia Tecau he was too strong in the quarter finals for Rohan Bopanna from India and the Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Rojer/Tecau triumphed in New York within an hour and a half in two sets: 7-5, 7-5.

The Dutch-Romanian couple eliminated the titleholders in the second round. Rojer and Tecau remained in control of Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah with 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cabal/Farah was placed first.

Rojer (39) and Tecau (35) won the tournament in New York in 2017. They also won Wimbledon together in 2015. In the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows the experienced duo will compete against the Croat Mate Pavic and the Brazilian Bruno Soares.

Wesley Koolhof already managed to qualify for the semi-finals of the doubles on Sunday in New York. He forms a duo with the Croat Nikola Mektic. They play in the semi-finals against the American Rajeev Ram and the British Joe Salisbury, the number 3 of the placing list.

The Minor to quarterfinals

For the first time in his career, Alex de Minaur reached the last eight in a grand slam tournament.

The 21-year-old Australian was too strong for Canadian Vasek Pospisil at the US Open in the fourth round. The number 21 on the placing list triumphed after 2 hours and 17 minutes in three sets: 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-2.

In the third round, the Minor sent home the eleventh-placed Russian Karen Khachanov in five sets.

Pironkova strikes Williams

Bulgarian tennis star Tsvetana Pironkova surprisingly reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York. The 32-year-old player defeated the Frenchman Alizรฉ Cornet in the fourth round after 2 hours and 49 minutes in three sets: 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. She never made it to the last eight at the US Open before.

Pironkova plays her first tournament in three years in New York. Due to motherhood she was out of rotation for a long time.

Pironkova plays in the quarter finals against the third seeded American Serena Williams, from whom she has never won in four previous meetings at the WTA Tour.
