The American regulator of medicines (FDA) recommends that the coronavaccine of Leiden pharmaceutical company Janssen be admitted to the US market. As a result, millions of people can be vaccinated in the short term.
A few days ago, the FDA had already said that the vaccine is safe and about 72 percent effective.
The American owner of Janssen, the company Johnson & Johnson, has already started distributing four million vaccines. It is planned that 20 million people will be vaccinated in a month and 100 million at the end of June.
The Janssen vaccine can be stored in a regular refrigerator and, unlike other manufacturers vaccines, one prick is enough.
Rapid approval in EU
President Biden welcomes the FDAs approval, but he warns of too much optimism. “This is exciting news for all Americans and an encouraging development in our efforts to overcome the crisis. But we must remain vigilant,” says in a statement.
It is expected that the vaccine can also be administered rapidly in the European Union. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approves Janssens coronavaccin on 11 March, sources within the EU have said to the American news agency Bloomberg.
