Marco van Basten was extremely impressed by Erling Haaland‘s performance against Manchester United on Sunday. At Rondo, the former footballer praises the Norwegian, but he also thinks that the striker can be defended.
“Just as smart as an attacker should be, so should a defender be able to be,” says Van Basten about how to stop Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. “You have to keep an eye on where the ball comes, but you also have to keep an eye on your husband. If you’re good at that, you can do that against these types of players too.”
The discussion at the table was mainly about the goal where De Bruyne gave the long cross against Manchester United and was able to tap Haaland in at the second post. Varane was the one who had to defend, but Van Basten is not so fond of the Frenchman. “So I don‘t like it very much. You must have such a ball as a defender, or your goalkeeper has to take it, or he must be too hard. You should always keep that feeling.”
“The fact that you’re doing this against Manchester United is really special. No one has ever done that before,” says Van Basten about Haaland. “We all know how difficult it is to score in the Premier League, let alone how difficult it is to make hat tricks.”
