Mark van Bommel believes that the game of Frenkie de Jong at FC Barcelona is similar to that of Andrés Iniesta. The midfielder from Arkel has found his turn in Catalonia and scores more often in recent weeks.
Van Bommel played with midfielders like Iniesta and Xavi together in Camp Nou and De Jong reminds him of his former colleagues. “I now find him similar to Iniesta, who always played a bit more forward than Xavi”, says the Limburger to the Cceit. “Like Iniesta, Frenkie is not a full sprinter, but is sure. They are both of the short pass cards, and when they put someone away in the depths, it happens with feeling. A feast for the eye.”
According to Van Bommel, the former Ajacied has to perform more defensively this season also speaks only to his advantage. “When Frenkie plays from backwards, hes more of a serving player. He can do both very well. For a coach, thats an advantage. Hes a mailman, a good postman. He has the ball on his feet for quite a long time and will bring it to fellow players, but as a result he draws opponents towards him. A kind of decoy.”
So far De Jong kicked off on behalf of the Catalans in 21 league matches and scored three goals. He also scored three times in the cup tournaments.
