FC Groningen said goodbye to Tom van de Looi on Monday. The 21-year-old midfielder reported to De Trots van het Noorden in 2010, played 35 matches for the first time and is now leaving for the Italian Serie B. Brescia, who is relegated from Serie A, has bought his contract until 2021 and will become his new employer. “A great adventure for Tom, in which we wish him unbelievable success. We also thank him for all the years that he has presented himself in the FC Groningen shirt”, FC Groningen director Mark-Jan Fledderus let us know through the official channels.
The son of Dutch Junior League coach Erwin van de Looi made his debut for FC Groningen at the beginning of 2018, where his father was the trainer at that time. However, after the arrival of Danny Buijs, Van de Loois contribution became smaller: during the 2019/2020 season he played for NEC on a rental basis. “After the preparation for the first selection of FC Groningen, the prospect of many playing minutes was not great, after which we looked together at how to deal with this. This resulted in a permanent solution with a transfer to Italy”, said Fledderus.
