On Wednesday evening, after winning the 36th national title, Edwin van der Sar addressed Erik ten Hag in a full Johan Cruijff Arena. The general manager of the Amsterdam club had nice words for the trainer.
“We have it again: the 36th”, began Van der Sar, quoted by Voetbal International. After that, he addressed Ten Hag. “Im standing next to a man who came to Ajax four and a half years ago. I used to think: what a weird snout you are now and then, Erik.”
“I remember our first conversation about football,” Van der Sar recalled. “What were you going to do with Ajax? You have exceeded all expectations. You let Ajax play dominant football, attractive. You also won prizes, made it to the Champions League semi-finals and won the cup.”
Van der Sar now sees Ten Hag leaving for his old club Manchester United. “You go to a club that I also have a warm heart to. I wish you the best of luck there. You go out through the front door of the Johan Cruijff Arena and I hope to see you again soon.”
