Chelsea tied 1-1 against RB Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night. New manager Graham Potter let Hakim Ziyech fill in, but the midfielder started again as a substitute player. According to Rafael van der Vaart, it is better for Ziyech if the playmaker might look for his luck elsewhere.
“He made another long cross that became a bit dangerous,” says Van der Vaart about Ziyech‘s match at Ziggo Sport. “Of course, he was never really a smiley face, but now you can see from everything that he’s not having a good time, I think. I hope he will soon go to a club where he can just play everything. Then, in my opinion, he is still the very best.” In his time at Chelsea, Ziyech did not win an undisputed base position.
Van der Vaart does think that Chelsea should have done better when they picked up the midfielder at Ajax. “Ziyech is a boy who you always have to set up when you get him. When you get players, you buy them not only for their football skills, but also for how someone is. Then you can say that Chelsea has so many good players, but guys like this really don‘t like sitting on the couch.”
In any case, Van der Vaart is not happy about Chelsea. According to the former midfielder, Potter needs to change a lot at the club. “I think Chelsea is very weak though. There really is still some work to be done there.”
