Van Gaal is open for third term as national coach Orange

Louis van Gaal is not opposed to a third term as coach of the Dutch national team. Should the KNVB approach him, he will consider that request. If asked, Van Gaal will let the CCeit know.

“I’ve been in contact with him,” says Arno Vermeulen in Studio Voetbal. “He says: if they approach me, I will seriously think about it. Actually he opens the door and is one of the candidates to become a national coach”

“If Van Gaal is available, he is the best candidate”, Pierre van Hooijdonk says. Rafael van der Vaart fears that Van Gaal will leave his mark too much when he becomes coach: “It’s such a pity that Koeman is gone. He was the right man in the right place”

Vermeulen does not have that fear: “He would be crazy, wouldn’t he? He wants to become European champion after all. In a previous era he turned everything upside down, not now. That would be insane.”

The 69-year-old Van Gaal was twice national coach of Orange. In 2014 he led the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup in Brazil. In his first term (2000-2001), Van Gaal did not manage to qualify with the Dutch Team for the World Championships in South Korea and Japan.

Since his departure from Manchester United in 2016, Van Gaal hasn’t had a club or country under his care. He announced his trainer retirement last year, but now he doesn’t rule out a return to the Dutch Team.

The KNVB is looking for a new national coach because Ronald Koeman has left for FC Barcelona. His assistant Dwight Lodeweges has been appointed as an interim national team coach for the upcoming international matches against Poland (4 September) and Italy (7 September). For the period after that, towards the European Championships in 2021, the football association wants to present a successor for Koeman.
