Sydney van Hooijdonk was already hoping for a transfer to Italy and was so happy when Bologna came on its path. The Breda striker, leaving NAC transfer free, was quickly convinced.
Even before clubs reported to the strong striker, he knew Italy had his preference. “I had always set my sights on that country because its a beautiful country and it suits me in terms of football style,” Van Hooijdonk says to ESPN.
The conversation with Bologna was very smooth. “They came up with a roadmap and said they have patience and trust in me. I was right to feel like I wanted this. Then everything went pretty fast and I flew here. From the interview with the technical director, I was out of date.”
At the Italian Serie A club, Van Hooijdonk will play with Mitchell Dijks and Jerdy Schouten. It is expected that he will have half a year to get used to the level and then more likely to play minutes.
