Vitesse fails to repay Ajax at the head of Eredivisie

Vitesse has failed to take the lead position in the Eredivisie. In the event of a victory over PEC Zwolle the Arnhemmers, the big surprise of the season, would have redeemed Ajax at the number one position. Halfway through Vitesse was still on victorious course, but after rest the team came up with a man less for the third time this season, and PEC Zwolle benefited optimally with two goals: 2-1

which led Vitesse to the second defeat of the season. Until Saturday, only Ajax was too strong, which resulted in the highest score after ten matches. The breaking point in the match was the red card for Idrissa Tourรฉ, who stood on the Achilles tendon of Kenneth Paal halfway through the second half.

It was the third time this season that Vitesse got down with a man. Previously it happened to the Arnhemmers in the away match against ADO Den Haag (Oussama Tannane) and home match against FC Emmen (Riechedly Bazoer). In both cases, Vitesse managed to win with one less man. But that wasnt in there this time. Immediately after the departure of Tourรฉ, Jesper Drost made the equalizer, after which PEC Zwolle came ahead with a penalty used by Mike van Duinen. The ball went on the dot, because Van Duinen had been walking on the heels by Matus Bero.

On the victory of PEC Zwolle there was little to say. The home team had large parts of the game the better of the game and Vitesse was unprecedented sloppy and waiting. But still, it was Vitesse that came to a simple head start. The opening goal came to the name of Oussama Darfalou, who had been given a base place after his successful attack last week. In the first half, the Algerian was not put in the way of straw by the Zwolse defense and was able to prick the ball in the target.

Two coronacases

Vitesse started against PEC with a squad, which had changed at a number of positions. Opposite the return after a suspension of Riechedly Bazoer was the absention of Eli Dasa, who, like Patrick Vroegh, had tested positive for corona. Meanwhile, the number of players from Vitesse who have been absent by corona has increased to eight, while eight staff members have already tested positive. All absent people have so far had no influence on the performance curve of Vitesse, but the attacking strong Dasa was definitely missed this time.

Vitesse-trainer Letsch had also chosen to rotate on a few positions in view of the heavy programme until Christmas. Lois Openda and Sondre Tronstad started on the bench, starting Darfalou and Thomas Bruns in the base. Vitesse was remarkably sloppy at the ball, but because, among others, Eliano Reijnders and Van Duinen do not use good opportunities, Vitesse entered the dressing room with a head start.

Unique opportunity

In the calm, Vitesses players were told that the leading position was for grabbing because of Ajaxs misstep against FC Twente. For that, only the lead had to be held. After the match against FC Groningen Vitesse had been at the top for a while, but that was only for half a day, because Ajax won Heracles the next day and took the lead again. The unique opportunity to get on the lead after eleven rounds turned out not to be spent on Vitesse. But the red for Tourรฉ turned out to be the breaking point. After rest, Vitesse was close to the 0-2 with Openda in the team twice, but Darfalou saw a chopping ball coming on the pole and Openda shot the pole. The team of Letsch squeezed out a nice final offensive with a man less, but the damage suffered could not be repaired anymore.
