According to the French Foreign Minister, the Taliban is lying and France will not establish relations with the newly formed government. Jean-Yves Le Drian spoke with French television just before he left for Qatar.
“The Taliban said they would let some foreigners and Afghans leave freely and spoke of an inclusive and representative government, but they lie,” the minister told the press. “France refuses to recognise this government or have any kind of relationship with this government.”
France has evacuated around 3,000 people from Afghanistan in recent weeks, most Afghans. In order to achieve this, the French started preparations in mid-April, four months before the Taliban took power.
For new evacuation operations, there have been talks with the Taliban to set up an airlift. President Macron spoke of cautious negotiations. Those talks were also involved in Qatar.
