The wife of the notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera, the former leader of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, was arrested by the American authorities on Monday at an airfield in the state of Virginia. She was arrested when she arrived in the United States via Dulles International Airport, just outside Washington, reports the U.S. Department of Justice.
The 31-year-old woman, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is suspected of being involved in importing cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the US. In addition, she was allegedly involved in two attempts to escape her husband from a Mexican prison in 2015 and 2016, and the woman has to appear in court in Washington on Tuesday.
Her husband, El Chapo, is currently serving a life sentence, after being convicted in February 2019 for trading large quantities of drugs and for participating in several murder conspiracies as leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexicos most violent drug organizations.
