Wout van Aert won the Zilvermeercross on Saturday in winter conditions. On the sand trail in Mol, Belgium, the brand new Belgian champion reached the finish after a solo. His compatriot Laurens Sweeck took second from a distance. Behind these two, the Dutchman Lars van de Haar kept his compatriot David van der Poel off the stage.
Van Aert drove from halfway through the race only after he had shaken off Sweeck as well. In two weeks the World Cup will be on the sand of Ostend. Van Aert first goes to training camp in Spain with the road team of Jumbo-Visma. Mathieu van der Poel, top favourite for conquering his fourth world title, has been sitting there since Monday.
Brand the strongest
Lucinda Brand won the Zilvermeercross with the women on Saturday in Mol. In the final phase, she was too strong for her compatriot Denise Betsema. The stage was completely orange, because Marianne Vos became third. The places four, five and six were also for Dutch people.
Betsema and Brand ran off early together and had the company of Manon Bakker. Bakker quickly couldnt keep up with the pace, after which it became a conflict between the Dutch riders. In the final round, Brand finally made a decisive hole with Betsema. Not on the sand, but a little after that she showed her competitive heels, allowing her to avoid the sprint.
The cross through mullet sand does not belong to one of the leaderboards, but it did fit well in the preparation for the World Championships of late January in Ostend.
