Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time. The German, who earlier this year for the first time already reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, simply won 6-2, 6-1 out of 21-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain.
For the Spaniard, the US Open is his third grand slam tournament. Earlier he reached the first round in Paris and the second round in Melbourne. After three fine victories in New York, the world’s number 99 had no chance of winning against the world’s number 7.
After being knocked off the track for two sets, Davidovich Fokina also suffered an ankle injury, which made him barely able to move properly in the third set.
Zverev took on the winner of the match between Croatian Borna Coric and Australian Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals.
